ANTELOPE
by BearInMind

From Jamie Sams' & David Carson's "Medicine Cards" (Revised, Expanded Edition)
Run Antelope...
Teach me,
Of action
And its pace.
Quickly,
Quickly,
So I may run with grace.

ANTELOPE: ACTION

When time was just beginning and the "Tribe of Man" was small, Antelope saw that the twoleggeds
were naked, hungry, and in danger of extinction. The Ancestors would soon vanish from
Mother Earth if action were not taken.

Antelope took action and came into the camp, calling all the two-leggeds together for Council.
"Great Mystery sent me to teach you a lesson. The lesson is to do. You have no need to be
fearful if you know what to do and then you do it," Antelope said.

"And what shall we do?" asked the People.

"If you are naked and cold, you should kill me and take my coat to keep you warm. It is my gift
to you. Do it."

"We will," said the People. "But what of our hunger. We are starving. What can we do to save
ourselves?"

"If you are hungry, you should kill me and take my flesh, for it will nourish you and make you
strong. It is my gift to you, and a part of my evolution. It is my service. Do it."

Antelope knew that humankind would survive the Ice Age if the People learned to eat meat.
Before the movement of the great ice mountains, fruit and vegetables had been plentiful, and the
two-leggeds had had no need to eat of the bodies of their fellow creatures. The clans of the
second world ate Antelope. Taking the instinct and wisdom of the four-leggeds into their bodies,
the People learned through each creature's essence, how to survive. They were taught never to
waste, or to take more than they needed. When they were in need, the two-leggeds knew to take
action.

Humans learned Antelope's lesson well. Because of Antelope, humans took proper action and
survived to this present day. Antelope taught humans to honor the gifts sent from Great Mystery,
and to avoid indiscriminate destruction of life.

Antelope signifies knowledgeable action. Antelope is a symbol for the antenna of your hair,
which attaches you to Great Mystery by its long cords of light. Looking at Antelope, you become
aware of your mortality and the short time span you have on this planet. With this in mind, you
must act accordingly. Proper action pleases the Great Mystery. Antelope medicine is the
knowledge of life's circle. Knowing of death, Antelope can truly live. Action is the key and
essence of living.

Antelope powers have been courted and shamanized since the dawn of time. Antelope clans have
been many, and the power of Antelope people is great. Antelope medicine gives you strength of
mind and heart, and the ability to take quick and decisive action to get things accomplished.
If you feel stymied, call on Antelope medicine. If you are balled up and twisted in knots,
Antelope powers will speak to you of proper action and soon set you free. Many ingenious
solutions to problems are whispered by Antelope. Listen, and even more importantly, act.
Surround yourself with the illumination and secret knowledge of Antelope. Combine this with
action and you will overcome any obstacle or hindrance in your path. If Antelope is your
Centering Tree and strong personal medicine, thank Great Spirit. Say what should be said. Your
judgment is sound and your actions will be successful.

Always listen to what Antelope has to say to you. Antelope in your cards indicates a message of
higher purpose. Antelope arms you with the Bow of Authority, and forces you to act on behalf of
self, family, clan, nation, and finally Mother Earth. Antelope says, "Do it now. Don't wait any
longer." Antelope knows the way, and so do you. Take courage and leap; your sense of timing is
perfect. When Antelope has bounded into your cards, the time is now. The power is you.

CONTRARY*

Contrary Antelope is a signal that you are not listening, and not acting on the will of Great Spirit.
You may be taking more than your share. Antelope medicine in the contrary makes you crazy
and quarrelsome. You will certainly be indecisive and not know what direction to turn. You
might be lying to yourself and others. Stop lying even if you think it will get you off the hook.
Contrary Antelope will trip you at every turn. Quit being so conventional and following others
all the time. Take your own authority. Let Antelope's heart beat strong in you, and you will know
the way. But as always, the message is "Do it!" The fear of the unknown subsides once action begins.

Contrary Antelope may also be telling you that a decision to start is now necessary. The main
element in procrastination is lack of conviction. To honor your chosen is to honor your
commitment to doing what you "proclaim" you are doing. Walking your talk is the essence of
Antelope people. Talking your walk is contrary Antelope personified.
To right contrary Antelope, three steps are necessary:

1. Have the desire to do something.

2. Make the firm decision to begin that action.

3. Do it!

“If Antelope is your Centering Tree and strong personal medicine, thank Great Spirit. Say what
should be said. Your judgment is sound and your actions will be successful.”

Antelope was the Center card in the Moon Lodge Spread (Inward Tree for Centering) I did for
myself last evening. I talked about that spread in the Divination forum.

*Note: Although the card was not drawn in the reverse/contrary, I added the information here for
someone in the future may draw it so and wish to see the definition so that they can perhaps learn
from the lesson and grow. Even the contrary is interesting to read. Check out what it says about...
"walking your talk... *wink*

Mouse:

“Action, Speed, Adaptability of the Mind.”
Antelope teaches survival.
How to avoid indiscriminate destruction of life.
The Antelope signifies knowledgeable action.

Antelope medicine is the knowledge of life’s circle, the knowledge and understanding of death.
Through Antelope you can learn to truly live and action is the key and essence to living. If you
have a problem which you cannot solve, call on Antelope and he will speak to you and set you
free. Listen to Antelope, but more importantly, act. You will overcome any obstacle in your path.

Antelope is the messenger of a higher purpose; he knows the way and through him, so will you.

Antelope can teach clairvoyance by listening to his voice inside of you. An Antelope person is
intrinsically psychic. Often it is in the form of clear-smelling – fragrances and odors will awaken
this power. Mediate using a fragrance with mush in it. Trust your instincts. If a person or
situation does not “smell” right, back away from it.

“Antelope Totem - Antelope medicine is ACTION, and not only action, but action which is
brought about by assessing a situation and making wise decisions before we act. Antelope gives
us the ability to not only assess a situation quickly, but to act upon that assessment quickly.
Antelope gives you the assurance needed to act through knowledge and not through fear.”

The Antelope
The antelope's message is to act sensibly. It knows about the circles of life and the mysteries of
life and death. This is why it can act fearlessly and realistically. Medicine men strive for the
power of the antelope. The antelope always pursues a higher objective with its actions that will
benefit the community. If you happen to be entangled in a difficult situation, call to the power of
the antelope, pay attention to the message you receive, and then act. The antelope will advise
you to trust in your intuition and own strength. Whenever you feel the need to take a leap
forward, pluck up your courage and do it.

Antelope
Keynote: Speed and Adaptability of the Mind
Cycle of Power: Spring and Autumn

The pronghorn is the only antelope native to North America, but it is not a true antelope in that it
does not shed its antlers, as is common among all antelopes. As with all horned and antlered
animals, it reflects a connection to the brow and crown chakra and all aspects of mental ability.
In the case of the pronghorn, it reflects a mental agility and quick wittedness that will enable it to
survive in the most difficult of environments.

The antelope is usually specialized for living within different environments--deserts, grasslands,
thickets or even swamps. They have a thick hide, sometimes an inch thick, which helps protect
them from the environment. The thick tubular hairs have large air cells which serve as an
insulation during winter. This insulating factor is partly what enables them to survive.
For anyone with an antelope totem, there may either be a need to insulate oneself or a need to
come out of hiding. The pronghorn can show how best to work with your insulation and help you
develop a new sense of timing in relation to it. It is not unusual for someone who is very
emotional or empathic to have the antelope show up at times as a totem.

All antelopes have great speed. They can run at speeds up to 60mph. Even baby fawns can run
around 25mph in the first day or so. Those with an antelope totem have always had extremely
quick wits. The ability to communicate thoughts is part of what the pronghorn can teach.
Pronghorns have a dynamic ability to communicate with others, and they have a great curiosity.
Children with pronghorn totems are often those who drive parents nuts with continual questions.
Their minds and imaginations are always active.

A pronghorn will signal danger to others by raising the white patch on its rump. Most
pronghorns depend mostly on their sense of sight. They have large eyes and a wide angle of
vision. They have eight times the vision of humans, so the moment the white patch flashes, they
do see it--even from a great distance.

This ability to see at a distance can be developed into a heightened psychic ability for prediction.
This is further reflected with the branched set of horns, giving the antelope totem the ability to
awaken your own higher psychic antennae. Clairvoyance is part of what it can teach. Most
individuals with a pronghorn totem are intrinsically psychic. They came in with the lights on,
although they don't always realize it. They can usually sense imminent danger, and as long as
they pay attention to it, they will seem to lead charmed lives--always just avoiding the
catastrophes that seem to befall those around them.

Pronghorns also have a strong sense of smell. At the first sign of danger, a strong musk scent is
also released. This totem can teach people how to know when people and situations don't quite
"smell" right. In traditional spiritualism there is a form of mediumship known as clairaugustus or
clear-smelling. Some mediums and psychic pick up fragrances of spirits or around individuals
and interpret them. This is an ability that this totem can help awaken. It is not unusual for those
with this totem to encounter strange fragrances throughout the day from unidentifiable sources.
Usually when this begins to awaken, it begins with the aroma of musk. Musk is a fragrance that
can be meditated with to help facilitate connecting with this totem.

Pronghorn males often have harems. The females usually have twins, and they give birth to them
in different spots. It is not unusual for those with this totem to find that their energies are divided,
come spring. Two avenues of activity usually open up. They each will be distinct and different,
even though there may be connections or they may have opened up at the same time from the
same source. It is always a good idea to look for new opportunities about to surface in your life
when the pronghorn shows up.

For the protection of the fawns, the mother stays away from them after giving birth, except to
nurse. The fawns are born with practically no scent, so as long as the mother does not leave hers,
they will be safer. This implies several things. First the opportunities that are about to open will
not need a great deal of attention. Second, it indicates an ability for the new opportunities to
grow quickly with just little nurturing.

The pronghorn feeds on shrubs and sagebrush. It can actually go for months or even a lifetime
without drinking water. It has the ability to get water from the plants that it eats. This reflects that
the pronghorn can teach you how to replenish yourself in whatever environment you live. It can
teach you how to use your adaptive ability to find life in areas not normally considered livable. It
can help you extract the life essence out of the most parched life experiences and develop a new
mental perspective and attitude toward them, so that you can move quickly into new areas of
your life.
