Chakras as we know, refer to the seven major energy centers within the "subtle body." The
"subtle body" is the non-physical body that is superimposed upon our physical bodies. Every
now and then we forget that each major chakra on the front of the body has a counterpart on the back.

The "Brow" chakra, often called the "Third Eye," is the center of "seeing" and related to the
element of light. It is often described as the chakra of "intuitiveness and perception." It is here
where pictures either symbolic or literal are revealed in the mind's eye. This chakra corresponds
to the pineal gland which is about the size of a pea and located in the center of the head, behind
the forehead, either at eye level or slightly above.

At the top of our head we find the seventh chakra, known as the "Crown" for it crowns the entire
chakra system. This is the center of our "cosmic consciousness"- a state of the highest order.
Chakras are linked by "nadis," a Sanskrit word meaning "hollow stalk." "Nadis" are the energy
channels through which the breath of life flows in, out and around the body.

When the Crown and Brow chakra begin to function in unison, all chakra centers are aligned and
a vortex of energy forms enabling the "Gateway of Cosmic Perspicacity" to open and activate the "third-eye."

It is said babies are sometimes born with the "third-eye" open, but for most people, meditation,
"visualization," patience and time are the ingredients that lead to developing and opening the
"third-eye." There is one exception; this chakra can open on its own for those who are more
spiritually evolved.

As the "third-eye" opens, it regulates our psychic perception adjusting the intensity of
clairvoyance, heightening awareness and strengthening the content of visualization. However, as
soon as we encounter negative emotions and stresses of daily living, it closes. The most
significant aspect of the "third-eye" is the clairvoyant information that is received and
interpreted. Visualization exercises are the first step in directing the energies to activate the
"third-eye." Therefore adopting a practice of daily meditation and visualization helps develop one's "third-eye."

When activated, the pineal gland opens the line of communication. The crown chakra reaches
down until its vortex touches the pineal gland. The "Prana/Chi/Life-Force," is received through
this energy center increasing access to information and expanding consciousness. With practice,
intuitiveness becomes more consistent as the "third eye" elevates one to a higher state of awareness.

Exercises to help open the "Third-Eye":
Begin each exercise in the same manner. Select your favorite grounding exercise, then center, relax and enjoy.

Exercise 1 ~ an excellent exercise to help strengthen the eyes.

Begin in a seated meditation. Close your eyes and let them sink into the darkness. Bring your
awareness to the point between your eyes, feel the darkness there. When you feel centered, open
your eyes and gaze straight ahead. Slowly look upward without moving your head . . . . . . . . . . . .
now trace a straight line downward and gazing as low as your vision can reach . . . . . . . . . . now
look to the left, once again, only move your eyes . . . . . . . . . . and to the right . . . . . . . . . . Close
your eyes and return to the darkness. Rub your palms together briskly until you feel your hands
getting warm. When the heat feels sufficient, place your warmed palms over your eyelids and let
your eyes rest in the warmth of your hands

Exercise 2 ~ a great way to practice visualization
The most useful exercise for strengthening the "third-eye" is simple meditation, focusing the
attention on the center of the head or the point between the eyebrows. Visualizing colors or
shapes is an important element to help open the "third-eye" and can be added at any time or you
can simply focus on clearing your "mind screen." Once the screen is blank, try to visualize a
question not with words but by using images and colors. Be creative in finding a visual metaphor
for your questions, and try using your imagination. Do this exercise for short periods of time only.

Note: The ability to visualize successfully depends on constant use - like a muscle. The more
you do it, the more vivid and capable your mind screen becomes.

Exercise 3 ~ Tuning in to the energy

Begin in a seated meditation. Spend about 3 - 5 minutes directing the flow of energy from your
feet, up to your solar plexus right up to your forehead. Let it rest there until you feel your
forehead tingling. As soon as you feel this happening, begin sending the energy outward to
anything in your surroundings. It could be another person, an animal, a plant or even an object.
Open your eyes, take a few deep breaths and reflect on what you may have felt.
Do this for a few minutes only, as I mentioned in the opening sentence about 3 - 5 minutes
should suffice, please do not over-do. I suggest keeping a journal of your progress.

Exercise 4 ~ Here is one I wrote for my Meditation Classes.

Copyright © Lotus ~ September 22, 2000
This exercise calls for the use of a crystal. I suggest working with a Quartz crystal. Quartz
crystals attune well to the heart chakra, stimulate the third-eye and activate the crown chakra.
Feel free to select clear quartz or whatever quartz summons you. Although I often use unpolished
stones in my spiritual work in this exercise, my preference is a polished stone, and I like using Lavender Quartz.

Get in a comfortable position. Always start by grounding and centering your energy. When you
feel sufficiently grounded, begin …

Gentle rub your palms together for a couple of minutes or until your hands feel warm. Pick up
your crystal and hold it in the palms of your hands. The heat from your hands will help activate
the crystal connecting and merging both energies together … yours and the crystal.

Close your eyes . . . . . Breathe slowly in and out, expanding your chest, stretching and relaxing
your body as you settle down into the peaceful darkness. You are safe . . . . . . . . . . you are at
ease . . . . . . . . . . you are very comfortable. With each inhalation you are quieting the mind . . . . .
. . . . . with each exhalation you are releasing all fears, worries, and stresses of the day.
Continue this gentle rhythmic breathing until you feel the crystal's warmth penetrating your
palms, about 2 - 3 minutes.

Place the crystal in your left hand, - left because this is the hand closest to your heart - and raise
your hand to your forehead, just between the brows. Place your right hand behind your head
directly opposite your left hand - visualize an imaginary line running through your head, front to back.

Now imagine a streak of illuminating white light streaming downward toward you. Feel the
warmth of this magnificent ray as it embraces you, penetrating through your hands and into the
crystal. The light's pulsing energy is moving around you . . . . . . . . . . swirling and dancing . . . . .
a slow cosmic dance . . . . . . . . . . making it's way down your body, touching every muscle, every
cell . . . . . . . . . . down . . . . . . . . . . down . . . . . . . . . . to your root chakra, down into Mother
Earth, grounding you firmly . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . spiraling around and around, it begins to climb
upward . . . . moving through each energy center . . . . . . . . . . . up . . . . . up . . . . . up to the top of
your head, caressing your crown . . . . . reaching out to worlds beyond . . . . . exploding into
cascading rays of light descending down upon you. "See" it . . . . . "Feel" it . . . . . expanding
outward . . . . . cradling . . . . . enfolding . . . . . and gently lifting you on wings of its translucent
luminosity . . . . unifying all energy centers . . . . . . . . . . deepening the link from the third eye to
the occipital lobe . . . . . . . . . . between you and the "Infinite."

Continue your breathing and become aware of the white light changing into a deep azure flame,
rising upward moving from your brow to your crown . . . . . . . . . . Feel the warmth as the indigo
ray wraps you in its energy the essence heightening consciousness . . . . . . . . . . . a connection is
being made . . . . . . . . . a bolt of energy . . . . . generating . . . . . sending . . . . . receiving . . . . .
your "third-eye" is awakening . . . . . . .. . . . . the lid slowly lifts and begins to open inward . . . . .
. . . . . the energy continues making mosaic patterns clearing away all debris . . . . . . . . . . you are
free from limitations . . . . . . . . . . in perfect harmony . . . . . . . . . as a vortex of color swirls about
you . . . . . your "third eye" has opened.

Sit a spell, welcoming images as they appear . . . . . . . . . . gradually the azure ray begins to fade
turning into to a shower of rainbow light, and once more rays of light cascade down upon you.
Stay in this place of rainbow color breathing in peace and love, and when you are ready, open
your eyes . . . . . blink a few times … you are completely relaxed and attuned to the vibration of peace and love.

Don't be alarmed if you feel light pressure in your head, or tingling in your hands, this is normal.
The "occipital lobe" is devoted to visual processing
Over stimulation of this chakra, in hopes of forcing some level of psychic ability, is unwise. The
refined cosmic energies required for this type of natural opening will unfold and develop with practice … in their own way and not as we insist on.
